This workshop will investigate the use of psychedelic assisted therapy for psychological distress through research results and case vignettes while reflecting on the historical use of psychedelics in indigenous cultures and their burgeoning use in 20th and 21st century medical applications. Zachary Sager, MD

Harvard Medical School Instructor, Attending palliative care physician at Dana Farber Cancer Institute
Zachary Sager, MD is an instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and attending palliative medicine physician at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Prior to completing palliative medicine fellowship, he trained as a psychiatrist and is one of less than 100 psychiatric trained palliative medicine physicians in the country. His clinical expertise focuses on the care of seriously ill individuals with comorbid psychiatric conditions at end of life, particularly at the intersection of pain, substance use and psychological trauma in the context of a life limiting illness. Dr. Sager's research focuses on the development of novel interventions for seriously ill individuals experiencing psychological distress at end of life, and he is presently the lead psychiatrist in a first of its kind study of psilocybin assisted psychotherapy for hospice patients experiencing demoralization. This study represents the first time a psychedelic drug has been given to patients at a Harvard affiliated site since the early 1960s.
