This workshop is designed to equip therapists with essential skills for supporting family members affected by addiction. With current research indicating that one in two people know someone struggling with alcohol or drug use, it's likely that half of your clients may be impacted by substance use issues, even if they're seeking help for other concerns. Unfortunately, family members often lack the necessary support and education to effectively cope with complex situations at home or with loved ones. This workshop aims to challenge common myths surrounding addiction, such as enabling, codependency, and hitting rock bottom, which can be stigmatizing, create barriers to treatment, and is potentially dangerous. Instead, we offer alternative perspectives based on kindness, compassion, and evidence-based practices.
Participants will gain insights into their own biases, learn tools for assessing clients and the impact of substance use from the onset of treatment, and hear from a client who has experienced positive change through a non-myth-based approach to treatment. This firsthand account will demonstrate how reframing old behaviors through a new lens can lead to transformative outcomes for both individuals and their families.
